How to get to D+ Empty How to get to D+

Sometime in the future I'm going to make it mandatory to be at least D+, if you can't reach D+ then you will be kicked from the team. But don't worry, you'll have at least a month or two to do this, and I'm going to help you.

"The difference between a D and a D+ is that the D+ took the time to learn a build order."
Wise words from a wise man...

I remember when I was a big noob, i googled "starcraft strategies" and found a bunch of websites with tons of build orders. I memorized them all. But also I was lucky enough to find a "Tips for Noobs" guide. It basically listed a bunch of things that you'll figure out once you've played a shit ton. These two things combined really improved my game. I used to play on USEast back in the day when everyone played LT. Because of this, every clan I joined I was the best (or one of the best) in the team.

I'll be posting several build orders in the sections for each race and ill post the noob guide here. Read this guide, learn some build orders, and watch some replays of good players, and you'll get to D+ in no time. (Warning: Long Ass Read)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.Don't Stop Making Workers.
More workers means more money. There's a reason why you see people always trying to kill them. You'll need at least 2 workers per mineral patch plus a few more in order to get the most money as fast as possible from your base. Best way to do this is to just don't stop making workers. Also you need to put them to work as soon as you get them. Idle workers are just as bad as too few workers. Another reason you're not gonna stop making workers is because you're going to...

2.Expand, Expand, Expand.
Make a CC, Nexus, Hatch at the nearest mineral patch. Now you have 2 bases. Send half your workers to mine minerals at your expansion and keep making more workers from both bases. Soon you'll be getting twice as much money then before. Expand again and now you're getting 3x as much money, again and its 4x as much money. Now that you have all this money...

3.Spend All Your Cash!!
Do not go over 400 minerals early game. That's enough to make a new expo. Don't ever go over 1,000 minerals, ever!! Imagine you're attacking someone or you're getting attacked and you have 1,000 unspent minerals. Those 1,000 minerals aren't helping you. But imagine what you could do with 10 more Zealots, or 20 more Marines, or 40 more Zerglings. Don't save your money, invest into more units, expansions, or better tech.
Another thing about spending your cash is too spend it properly. This mainly applies to Protoss and Terran, but if you just que up like 5 units in a Gateway/Barracks, you are not spending your money properly. Queing Units is just as bad as saving/not spending. What's better? Having 1 Gateway making 5 zealots and having to wait while you get them one by one? Or having 5 Gateways making a zealot each, and then getting all 5 zealots at once? So if you have too much cash make more Hatcheries/Barracks/Gateways.
Also don't forget to make overlords/pylons/supply depots. Forgetting will slow everything down. And don't go making 10 pylons/supply depots/overlords, before everything else like a FPM Newbie. Pylons/Depots won't defend you from a rush (well if you put them at your choke they might slow it down...). Make only enough to keep your worker/units production going non-stop. You will need plenty of Units because...

4.Units Are Better Than Static Defense
Only make Static Defense such as Cannons, Turrets, Bunkers, Spore Colonies, Sunken Colonies when you need them. If the first thing you do is surround your base with Static D, yes you will be safe from an attack, but so will your opponent, because you can't move your Static D to attack him! Units are much better because they can move to Defend and Attack. If you don't make enough units to attack your opponent he can do whatever he wants! He can trap you in your base with his own units until you run out of money. He can take the entire map and soon overpower you with a much larger army. He can tech to better units that make your Defense obsolete (siege tanks, guardians, reavers). Also you cant cover everything with Cannons so he can just run-by your defense, make air units and fly past it, or make dropships and go around it. The main reason people build cannons, turrets, sunkens, is to protect a fast expo. You see that a lot in replays nowadays but notice how they try to build only as much they need. Static D slows you down so only build as much as you need (if you need it). This is why you....

5.Scout, Always Scout
There's basically 3 things someones going to do at any time. Rush/Mass, Expand, or Tech. Here's an example: You scout a Protoss early in the game with a worker, and you see him make 2 gateways. If he cut probes to get his gateways up fast, hes Rushing. If he's doing 2 Gateways but didn't cut workers (cuz he wants a good economy), hes Massing. Either way he's going Units (zealots). If you see him warping in a Nexus at his expo then he's Expanding. If you see him taking his gas and making a Cybernetics Core, hes Teching. Adapt your strategy to what you scouted. If hes rushing you get ready for it. If he is Teching or Expanding, Tech or Expand yourself to keep up, or Rush him. Keep scouting hes going to do it again. Is he going to Mass Dragoons? Going to Expand? Or going to Tech to Dark Templar/Reavers? Adapt to what you see (This is why you see good players do their best to keep a worker running around in their opponents base for as long as possible).
When you enter mid game, is he going to Mass from 2 Bases? Is he going to Expo and take a 3rd base? Or is he going to Tech to Arbiters/Carriers? Whatever he does just know what it is and you can Attack, Expo, Tech yourself while preparing for what you saw.
Also, by this time you should have better scouting tools like Overlords/Observers all over the map or use Scanners.

6. Hotkey Everything
You have to do all the things I just described and you have to do it all at the same time. You'll need to attack/defend with your army, go back to your base and spend all your cash, take more expansions, and scout all over the map for enemy's expansions/army. Using Hotkeys will make doing all this alot easier. If you don't know how to use hotkeys, this is how: First grab a bunch of units or a building. Press ctrl+1-9(or 0), Now that building or group of units becomes that number key. You can now command units or tell a building to make more units without actually looking at it/them. If you press the number key twice, it will center your screen on that unit/building. Very useful. Hotkey all your buildings to make spending your cash easier and hotkey all your army to make attacking/defending easier.
Also, you can try saving locations. Center your screen on the location you want to use and press shift+F2/F3/F4. Now anytime you press one of the F Keys your screen will be centered on the location you assigned it to. This is useful for Terran/Protoss, who like to clump all their Barracks/Factories and Gateways together to make unit production easier. Or you can use them to make cycling between all your expansions easier.

7.Memorize Build Orders, Read Strategy Guides, Watch Replays, etc...
Things like what units to make, when to expand, best time to attack, etc, you learn from reading strategies/build orders and watching replays of good players. For strategies, build orders, and replays, check out teamliquid and gosugamers. Those sites are good. I'll try to help by putting up some replays/guides in the Strategy Sections here. Also watch your own replays of when you lose to see why you lost. Most likely you failed at doing one of the things above, or your opponent did it better than you. Once you figure out what you are doing wrong work on it.
Example1: Your opponent had a much bigger army than you and you couldn't attack or hold it off. Most likely you didn't follow 1-4 on this guide. Did you forget to make workers non stop? Did your opponent take more expansions than you? Did you spend all your cash?
Example2: You died or were set behind by a rush. Most likely they attacked you right away with units or they teched really fast and hit you with something you weren't prepared for. This is probably where you will need to make Static D. Work on your scouting and prepare for it.
Example3: You make a bunch of Static D at your base preparing for a rush, but you were wrong and that rush never came. Now your army is smaller than it should be and your opponent is able to attack you or take more expoes than you. Again work on your scouting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those things are the main things you should work on. Easier said than done, I'm still working on them. I sometimes forget to produce workers, forget to scout during mid-game, and I go over 1,000 minerals a lot. But the more you play while working on these things, the better you'll get. That's really the difference between D, C, B, and A players. That and better strategy which you learn by watching pro players play (replays).

NOTE TO ZERGS: This guide was originally written by a Protoss player and I was able to apply all that to Terran easily. But Zerg is different. They can't mass Drones non stop because larva is needed to make units too. So you have to choose times when you mass drones or mass units. This is based a lot on scouting. Also, you don't need 2 Drones per mineral patch. Gas is more important and Zerg will have more Expoes than the other races anyways. So 1 or 1.5 per mineral Patch is usually fine. Watch replays of good Zergs to see how they do it.

Nice guide.
As I played (this is my 2nd season) as D, I noticed the difference between a random D and a solid D+ is huge, but can be mended quickly by memorizing build orders and getting a better sense of the game. However, from D+ to C- is a whole different thing. I'm havent gotten to C- cause I get too lazy to mass game to get better feel of the game + macro/micro.

I thought only progamers had 250 "real" apm. Anyways, APM is important, because it lets you do all the things on this guide faster/better. But its not something D+/C- players need to worry about. Just learn the basics, then when you get to C+/B-, you can start worrying about your APM.
